I thought I'd sghare this pic. When we were in St Lucia over christmas my bro-inlaw and I got up before the sun to go over to the east coast. We were looking for B.Caribbeaus and Wolfgang had told me they were more likely to be found over the arid side of the Island. The sun came up and we walked along this dusty silent track . Soon,I noticed american kestrels sitting along the wires from the telegraph poles bobbing their heads . I decided to see how close I could get and walked up a dirt mound directly below the kestrel pictured . In my hand I had a stick about 4ft long and I held my arm up above my head to point towards the bird . The end of the stick was no more than a couple of feet away from the Kestrels claws ,and he didn't budge at all , just sat there looking down at me . I took this pic with no extra lens . Sorry about the light quality , but the sun had only just come up and I didn't want to use flash. Amazing, you can't get anywhere near our UK kes.

Hi Alan, that's REALLY close! They're pretty much unapproachable over here. Funny thing, the picture opn your top post shows up on my home machine, but not here at uni. Very Strange. Do you know if these Kestrels are the same as the American Kestrel or a seperatre island species? Cheers, Lee. |

Hi Lee , Yeah, It must be Bravenet . Sometimes I can see the pic ,and sometimes I can't . I don't really know if they're a seperate species , My book Birds of the Eastern Caribbean say's not. Funny though, I saw 3 different species of raptor in St Lucia , and when I asked the locals what they were the answer was the same for all three,"Chicken hawk" Cheers Lee, Al |
