Some sun in East Devon today but not as much as I thought was forecast. It is mild at 11 deg. so I inspected the covers and compost heaps mid afternoon. Found these ... one under the plastic sheet of a compost heap and the other under a Coroline sheet. Both a similar size of half grown.

Checked on my covers and compost heaps this morning and found these two in a heap:
There were none under the covers (Coroline) which are sodden and cold feeling, whereas the black plastic on the compost heaps felt hot to the touch. The most popular heap I watered last autumn to help it rot down and I don't think the slow worms like that too much for hibernating. I kept the other dry and it seems to be preferred. When it is warmer I don't think they mind wet compost heaps. Be interesting to see which heap has the most emerging slow worms as the season goes on.

It has been sunny today here in East Devon up to early afternoon. Checked my covers and found all these in one compost heap. This is the one I previously said was possibly too wet. Maybe slow worms found it quite acceptable.
This last image is a closer look at one of the clumps |

Lovely shots Suz, so many, and nice variety in markings. Making a point of commenting, because I do check in still and enjoy your slow worm farming

Finally! Although the weather has been very fine and very warm for the time of year, the part of the garden where my slowies live has pretty much been in shade until now, when the sun has finally got high enough.
First of many I hope... |
