My garden is inundated by literally hundreds of what I assume are tiny common toads. I've also seen lots of them elsewhere in the area, up to a mile away. Did a bit of research and it seems a bit odd that they are appearing in such numbers so late in the year?

It's not really late in the year. Toads stay active if the temperature is adequate and rain will see them out and about hunting. Good to hear that you have so many tiny toads!

How small are they? It's possible they are young of the year leaving nearby ponds. I've seen this on heathland and it is hard not to step on them there are so many.
