Volunteers required for conservation task at Hindhead Commons, Surrey.

1st and 2nd of November 2003, meeting at 10:00 am.

Volunteers are required for the movement of felled birch and the construction of log and brashing piles within the area.

Large piles of birch logs topped with brashings and dried bracken are a proven method at this site, providing basking and egg laying sites for reptiles and hibernation opportunities for amphibians.

We aim to replace piles that have degraded over the last 20+ years and also to reduce the shading in the area caused by the infill of birch. Full surveys of the site will be carried out over the next few years to monitor the success of the task, and once formed, the piles maintained.

The work will be carried out alongside a member of the Hindhead Commons management team, who will carry out any necessary work with chainsaws.
