Placed 'pond socks' in my pond 2 weeks ago as medium for my plants. Third palmate newt found today with it's leg shredded. I had suspected a disease/predator but upon trying to lift the newt for closer inspection, I found fibres from the pond sock were wrapped tightly around it's leg, and in effect, had shredded it. The pond socks look smooth but when you inspect them closely they present loose fibres that snare newt legs.

Do not put them in your pond!
