Hi

Last time, during Smooth snake trip I have found two melanistic specimens of Zootoca vivipara. They were totally black. I have asked some polish herpetologist if the saw this black form of Zootoca, but only one person saw one or two melanistic specimens. I've tried to find some publications about case of melanism in Common lizard, but I've found nothing. Did anyone have similar observations? Do you know some references about this?
I apologize for my english :-)

The young are black, but I presume you mean adults.

Try googling or click here - Field body temperatures, mechanisms of thermoregulation and evolution of thermal characteristics in lacertid lizards..

Just one of a few papers out there that discuss this in more detail.

I've never seen one, but I was sent this picture of a specimen from S. Yorks a few years ago:

Just saw an adult black lizard looking just like the one in the photo above, Aylesbeare Common, East Devon (along with dozens of 'normal' ones). First one I've seen.
