Please could someone ID this lovely little amphibian. I have trawled the internet and my books to no avail. It is about 5cm long and was seen near a small pond in central Somerset today (1 Sept 2013). I would love to know exactly what it is.

I did wonder about that Paul, however all the pictures I found showed them to be black and green. Could it be a juvenile perhaps?

I would have said palmate newt. I thought marbleds were green when they metamorphosed.

Yea I would say palmate.

This is a juvenile alpine from North Wales.

young palmate newt, typically more interestingly patterned that smooth newt metamorphs. Nice animal!
