Yesterday I observed a Smooth Newt swim up to a group of shubunkins and goldfish in my 'fish' pond (also have two wildlife ones with no fish) and proceed to swim alongside them for a good 5 minutes it seemed to be occasional biting at their sides. I can only assume it may have been picking off parasites but it may have been agressive. The fish for their part seemed unpeturbed.

Has anyone else observed this type of behaviour?

fabulous observation!  I'd love to see a video of that.  Never remotely observed anything like it - I think your parasites idea has some value; I doubt it was trying to be aggressive.

Hi Will,

Yes I would agree with you I didn't see it as agressive really either and completely unlike any behaviour I have observed before, I most often see them passively drifting with only occasional bursts or the odd manic dash to the surface for air. At times it seemed like it was part of the shoal. had no means to video with me unfortunately.
