Gemma,

There is a new beta version fo the Google toolbar for Ie. When enabled this will search your pages when displayed and highlight ISBN #'s, adresses and other information and then insert a link directly into your page that reroutes the user away from the site to Amazon (for ISBN's).

This may/not be a problem to RAUK, it's not getting good press elsewhere.

hmmmm could be a problem Mike, we have a lot of references to ISBN#s on RAUK, particularly the ID intro page, might have to lose those! Thanks for letting me know!

I have done a bit more digging about the new toolbar and tried a few things.
There is a javascript snippet you can add (per page) that disables the link the toolbar inserts into your page, but not the links in the "show book info" button, so a user could still go off site to Amazon (probably not too bad, reccomend a book they may actually want to buy it !). There is another snippet that munges the button but the code is longer and might attract unwelcome attention when user find it obfuscated.

I have looked at a couple of RAUK pages, Eg. AMPHIBIANS AND REPTILES (Beebee, Griffiths & Griffiths) ISBN 000 220083 does not trigger the link, it does not see it (with or without the ISBN tag). However writing the number in the format given by isbn.org (0-00-220084-8) is recognised and the link appears. So for the moment breaking the number up into bits seems to confuse the toolbar, 000 2200848, 00 02 20 08 48, 0002 200848 are all missed.

Incidentaly it also misses ISBN's in the new 13 digit format, 0-00-220084-8 (found) becomes 978-0-00-220084-4 (missed) but this might not stay for long as the toolbar is in beta and is to be reviewed.

Ah, the joys of maintaining web sites !.

Thanks again Mike, I suppose it isn't such a terrible thing if people want a book but the whole point of providing ISBNs was so they could choose to search for the book if they wished.. not to be hijacked by amazon ggggggrrrrrrrrr....
