Is there such a thing as a bully frog? As I sat and watched my frogs milling about in our pond today, I noticed a large female who was aggressive and feisty. Everytime another frog went near her, she swam over and headbutted it! She also was extremely active, swimming round and round the pond. At one point, I put my hand in the water and she had a go at me!! I know frogs aren't terretorial, so what on earth is happening? Any herpto-psychologists out there? Any ideas gratefully received,
Jean

Hi, I would suggest it might be that this female isn't quite ready to mate and is reacting in this way to discourage the advances of male frogs until she is ready. Just my thoughts and I would be interested to hear any other interpretations of the bahaviour. Perhaps you can let us know Jean if the behaviour changes and she becomes less aggressive in time? |

Gemma, that makes sense, as she certainly is 'bulging at the seams'. I will definately post when she (Bertha, as in Big Bertha!) regains her figure!
Thanks
