They are about 4 to 5 inches long, cream top but shiny brown underbelly. They are enjoying living in my rockery on the edge of woodland and ivy covered floor, which I am happy about as my entire garden is given over to wildlife friendly environments. But I am frustrated as I have never seen anything like this before and I need to know what I have here for my catalogue. Can you help, please?

Hi there
No problem at all. These aren't snakes at all but are actually juvenile slowworms - which in turn aren't worms but are actually legless lizards. Beautiful little living gems at this age but altogether beautiful albeit in a different way as they grow. Could reach a total length of 21" but as a consequence of partial tail loss to predators around a foot long is much more common. A gardener's friend as their favourite foods include small slugs and snails. Nice to hear they are appreciated in any event. Chris |
