Hi
We spotted this dead snake at the side of the road in Leicestershire. It's markings don't seem to be an adder as they are irregular. Any help would be great? The whole family has been puzzling over it for a couple of weeks now!

Hi Jenny

Firstly please accept my apologies for the delay in authorising your post and replying due to a bout of ill health.

This appears to be an escapee from captivity. Certainly not any British species. The markings, size and general build suggest a Hognose Snake (an American species fairly popular as a pet) but it is difficult to be certain without seeing the head in more detail. (you could search Google for images of "hognose snake" and see for yourself. Another distinct possibility is a sand boa - a Eurasian group - but again, more detail is needed to be sure of either.

Having said that we have members who may well be able to be even more definite.

All the best
Chris

It's far too big for a hognose.

Build and skin texture looks like a boa or python to me, maybe a young yellow anaconda?
