I just found this in a heap of soil on my allotment. Any idea what it is? It was about three inches long. Its underbelly was pinkish and I think that's its natural colour, though it had just been dug up. It was dry to the touch. I put it under a thick stand of rhubarb to keep it out of sight of the birds and let it go. Edited by pdblake - 12 Jun 2012 at 8:21pm |

Hi and welcome. It's a terrestrial newt, either a smooth (common) newt or palmate newt - I'd go for smooth newt although it's a bit hard to tell with the soil on it. You did the right thing, and it will repay you by eating small slugs, greenfly etc.
