I've been working in the garden this morning to remove a load of paving, concrete and a large rubble filled "seating area" when I came across this little chap. It was quite chilly this morning so he was hardly moving but after half an hour or so in full sunshine he wandered off into the undergrowth.
He was only about 4cm long so I'm guessing a juvenile? I fear I might have destroyed his home but I had no idea we had a lizard in the garden. From a quick check online I think it must be a common lizard but I haven't been able to identify it from the pictures I've seen. Am I correct? Hi Andy and thanks for posting; he's actually a juvenile smooth newt - newts spend much time on land outside the breeding season and also before they become mature. He'll find somewhere equally dark, damp and secure for his liking, I'm sure.
