I have just discovered that the local highways authority is starting work Monday, 6th February, strengthening a road bridge - the work is schedule to last for 6 weeks and could easily over run.
These roadworks will be right at a main road crossing point for migrating toads to a local pond. Obviously, at the moment, there isn't an issue, but with the work set to last 6weeks, there is plenty of time for the weather to change and trigger toad migration. Suugestions please for how I might get this work delayed? Thanks, Larry |

Hi Larry,
My first option would be to get in contact with the local highways authority and express your concern. Regarding PR they would get some mileage with a press release stating they delayed the work due to concerns for local wildlife. If that doesn't work, they can take some mitigation measures during the works. Restricting works to daylight hours for example and covering up any pits or trenches dug at night to prevent toads dropping in and also checking carefully first thing in the morning for any that did. It's the sort of situation where you will need the people on the ground doing the work on side and vigilant if at this late stage it cannot be delayed.

I can only agree with what has already been said, you will need feet on the ground to prevent losses.

Hi Larry
-where is the location? maybe there's a local active ARG which could help? are you part of an organised toad patrol which has been registered with the Highways Agency? if there is one, that could help add weight to your case... good luck Will |

The toads are s41 species under the NERC Act so the Highways need to address this as they have a legal obligation to do so.....
