i found a little dude in the garden dont no wot it is. its 4 to 5 cm long greeney brown with a orange belly with black spots plz help

hi sounds like a newt. if you could post a pic it would help. assuming it is a newt (and not a great crested newt) the best thing to do would be to release it where you found it. newts live quite happily in gardens so you won't have to do anything, although a log plie would be a helpful addition. the problem with keeping it is that, around this time of year they start to hibernate so you won't see anything of it anyway. then, from jan onwards they take to water to breed so you'd have to let it go then as it would be difficult to recreate a suitable breeding hbitat in the house! it would also be illegal to keep it if it turns out to be a great crested newt! if you wanted to keep it for a few days make sure the habitat has damp and dry areas, plenty of cover and food...small worms and other invertebrates. make absolutely sure the newt can't dry out. i would reiterate though, that the best thing to do is release it where you found it. you could, of course, put a small pond or sunken container in the garden. even the smallest water feature will attract loads of wildlife including other amphobians. good luck tim |

its probably a smooth newt wild newts do badly in captivity if not cared for properly they are really picy about food so just let him go in your garden maybe build a log pile for him.
