Hi,
I found a Slow Worm last weekend that had been attacked, possibly (I thought) by a Snake. I expect that you are the people that could advise me one way or another. I am going to post a picture in a minute of an animal that has been hurt. That can be a distressing thing to see and so I put up this preamble to give you a chance to skip to another post. These things don't distress me because I manage a small woodland where every thing uses everything else for survival and sometimes they eat each other. So, this is the location. When I found the animal it was still writhing and blood was pulsing from the wounds. I din't see anything leave the area. It died or at least stopped moving and appeared dead within about a minute. I left the area immediately, taking the view that it would be better to let the predator eat the meal. Later I returned and the Slow Worm was gone. He died from two small puncture wounds to the head. I couldn't see any other marks on his body. Would a Snake kill like that? We have Adders and Grass Snakes here but also birds with sharp beaks. Thanks for looking. Crispin |

I'd tend to agree with Jon; pheasant perhaps - they're a real pain where reptiles (even adders) are concerned. If it was really two separate bite marks, rather than beak marks, I'd go for a mustelid, like a weasel.

Might I suggest domestic cat. I have found grass snake that had been attacked by dogs while they where out on their early morning walk and seen a lot of cats with collars with bells on, hunting in Epping Forest.

Better to be lucky than good looking. |
