I agree with you Chris. Obviously, it is a very rare occurrence but the clue is in your last paragraph re the male dying in hibernation. The storage of sperm for fertilization could be an insurance policy. Or as Will has hinted, in the years where Grass snakes do not carry eggs, could be those where they are inclined toward an autumn mating to get an early start for the following year when they would be.
It's all conjecture, and I suppose we may never know exactly what happens, but there is a possibility.
I note that there isn't as many sightings as usual this year as in past years, has anyone apoint of view on that?
