Hi Ray,

Going back a few years...I used to regularly see Common lizards surrounding the Portman ravine. A few are still there, but they appear to be far more scarce these days.

I believe that a baseline survey was conducted last year. When this is repeated it would provide tangible evidence of effects, but the causes are likely to remain subject to speculation.

Having seen how aggressive Wall lizards can be whilst defending territory (particularly the green-backed form), I personally have little doubt that some Commons have been driven away from some of the prime habitat.

In a stand-off, I've never seen a Common lizard win a dispute vs a Wall lizard. I've never seen a Common really fight back, they just run away, with the faster more agile Wall lizard in pursuit. I have observed Wall lizard aggression towards both sexes of Zv. In one case the Common lizard autotomated its tail.

the subject of wall lizards-for or against isnt old hat to new members like me who werent on the forum (and in my case didnt even own a computer) last year. and since the wall/green situation is still ongoing in the field with relatively quick range expansions and continued breeding etc, maybe the subject shouldnt be closed. there seem to be many highly conflicting views on it and its been very interesting to read the few here.

dave w's stance on the matter in particular is very thought-provoking. im gonna chew on that a bit
are there many people pressing for eradication?
thanks all

My 2p..

Nothing wrong with UK wall lizard colonies where they occupy an ecological niche and pose no risk to native species.

We don't yet understand the full effects of wall lizard presence upon native species, such as the protected Sand lizard, although the available evidence is not encouraging.

Surely the only safe course of action is to keep these two species separated in the wild, until the risks are known, and those people releasing such alien species into the wild, in areas where they could pose a risk to native species strongly discouraged.

Well said Steve, couldn't agree more.

Just to note that Davew's feelings and comments were curtailed when a string of insults appearred through this forum, at this point I realised that arguing sensibly with people who stand to gain money from the erradication is fairly pointless so I don't bother now.

As I said I don't bother now, however if someone quotes me with a little winking emoticon then like any prodded animal I will respond.
