woke saturday morning to find 4-5 lumps of 5-10 eggs each floating around the edge of the pond.
i guess a full clump had been laid, but an animal had eaten most of it, and these were the remnants. quite a few had no inner black dot in the egg, but were just clear. anyway sunday 16th march found 3 healthy clumps laid on the lawn (overnight rain had caused the pond to burst its banks). this was 2 weeks later than the spawning date for our local major breeding pond about 1/2 mile from my house. |

awful year for me this one.
what i tend to do is take any spawn laid out of my main pond, and put it into a separate pre-formed pond (not dug into the ground, but just sat on my patio to prevent any predators getting to it - mainly newts, birds and foxes). when they have grown all four limbs i put them back into the main pond to lose their tail and wander off. i keep a running count of how many i relocate back to the main pond. last year i managed approx. 2400 from 5 clumps of spawn. sadly, this year the late cold weather killed a lot of the hatched tadpoles. a couple of clumps didn't develop at all and one was polished off by newts. so at the stage where the hind legs are half developed i am left with only 200 odd tadpoles from 17 clumps of spawn. |

It's probably better odds than if they were managing in the wild. Well done.
