This page gives you details of the training days that have been set up around the UK for NARRS volunteers. Attending a training day is not mandatory, and these events are aimed at people who need training or would like to brush up on their skills. The training days will provide the necessary training for surveyors to take part in the National Amphibian Survey and/or National Reptile Survey. This includes amphibian and reptile identification, habitat assessment, survey methods, NARRS instructions and protocols, health and safety, licensing, and landowner permissions. Attendees will receive their National Amphibian Survey and/or National Reptile Survey packs at the training events. (Those not attending training events will be able to obtain packs from us directly or from this website).

Most of the events cover amphibian and reptile survey in the same day. Whilst this makes for a long day, there will be generous breaks in the programme for lunch (bring a packed lunch) and dinner (e.g. pub meal). Some courses only cover amphibian survey (typically late afternoon till dark) or reptile survey (typically morning/afternoon). Attendance is free, but you may be asked for a donation to cover costs and help generate funds for local shared equipment etc.

The list below shows the events that have been confirmed so far. Setting these up has involved the efforts of a lot of people, and the trainers are running the events in a voluntary capacity. We realise that events havenÆt been set up everywhere in the UK, and hope you will find one within reach. We are still in the process of organising more training events, and will endeavour to get as many gaps filled as possible. Please check back to this page weekly for additions.

If you want to attend a training course, please contact the organiser directly to book a place. Places are limited, and will be allocated on a first-come-first served basis. If you book a place on an event and find you cannot attend, please inform the organiser as soon as possible. You will need stout boots, waterproofs, and ideally wellies for amphibian events.
