Yeaterday I visited a site in Chelmsford where I found a freshly laid crested newt egg on a piece of unidentified plant (broadleaved).

A new record for the reserve, At least the presence of newts we will have to wait and see whether breeding is successful in the later part of the spring

Hi Jon

So far have been informed of egglaying in Merseyside, Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire, all within the past 2 weeks - certainly worth watching to see breeding results from these early layings - bit tricky mind with a pond full of crestie larvae 'soup' which is likely to appear in due course !

Well at long last they are starting to egg lay in Derbyshire after all the recent cold and bad weather. Ran a training course yesterday and in the afternoon field visit to the nearby Wildlife Trust reserve didn't see or net any GCN but every young willowherb plant in the water was covered in their eggs. We did see and net a few smooth newts & found one of last year's SN metamorphs under some fallen branches.

In the evening it was a different story with the torchlight survey showing loads of GCN around the edge of the pond (& conversely saw hardly any smooth newts). Also found one of last year's GCN metamorphs up a tree ! Well about a foot off the ground up a dead silver birch tree trunk.
