Anybody know what species these acrobatic chappies are ? Seen in my garden (Surrey) on Friday. Looks like birch leaves, but I'm no expert. |

Hi Steve Look to me like the Birch Sawfly (Croesus septentrionalis). We used to be plagued by a vague relative, the Gooseberry Sawfly (Nematus ribesii) |

Chris, That looks like a spot-on ID, many thanks. I'd not noticed them before, and I think the Blue tits have had 'em all now. |

Vicar,
Have a look at the cover of AIDGAPS: A Key to the major groups of british terrestrial invertebrates BY S.M.Tilling. You don't get a more endorsed id than that! |
