These would have ben born last year surely or would the female slowworm hold onto them through the winter?

The young slow worms in my compost heap are that size. They don't put much (hardly any) bulk on before they hibernate soon after they're born.

Steve, Just one of my compost slow worms has this colour. In the flesh a sort of coppery red - quite stunning. Makes it easy to ID. Mine is a juvenile too so I wonder if the colour will tone down as it matures. |

Having seen a few adult slow worms in my garden and rescued them from my cat, today I saw a young one - about 5 inches in length, gold in colour with black stripes along its sides. I thought that young weren't conceived until June and the gestation period was 3-5 months. Can anyone tell me whether this is this year's baby nor whether it is likely to have been born last autumn. It was under a flower pot on top of some loose paving slabs and near to the roots of an established ivy plant. Thanks

A warm but cloudy morning here in East Devon when I looked at the slow worms in the compost bins at 10.30. There were 9 in one - all sub adults and one this year's babe. Judging by the size it is a few weeks old. I guess I'll see more newbies each day now. Another bin had 4 sub-adults.
