Vicar, I live in Havant, SE Hants. I'm free most weekends, but I don't drive which might be a pain.

Might not be a problem...it depends if anybody is local to you.

For a start, check out this website to see if there are known sightings close to you:

Hi Dasaan,

If you have no luck finding someone local to give you some pointers here are a few ideas for spotting lizards.

Firstly start at a site where  you know they are present (seems you have that bit sorted )

Try to search with the sun to your back looking at areas of the ground or banks that catch the sun

Look well ahead, it is easy to startle reptiles and walk slowly with light steps (they will react to ground vibration, movement and sound)

Try to pick-out 'features'. Things like logs and fence posts that are catching the sun. Discarded tyres in grassland areas attract lizards too.

There are also good and bad times of day to look. Generally (as it is so weather dependent there can be exceptions) from 9 - 11 in the morning and 1.30 ish to 4 in the afternoon will give good result. Best weather is overcast with occassional breaking sun.

Once you get your 'eye' for looking for reptiles you will soon be able to spot habitat that just 'looks' right and search for more.

I would just add don't despair if lizards shoot off into the undergrowth as if you stick quietly around they often return to their basking spot very quickly.
