This past week I've heard my usual chorus from frogs in deep cover. I always hear this in September/October, but never see the frogs making the noise. Apart from the croaking at breeding time, this seems to be the only other vocal time here. Anyone know what this is all about? I would say it is one frog per location, not a general chorus.
Still plenty of slow worms about under covers.

I've always put it down to hormones Suz. I think the males are already preparing for the breeding season before hibernation. So one hears them calling ahead of time. Just a hunch on my part.

Agreed, also why they sometimes pair up at this time of year too. In the south of their range they would go straight into spawning, but here they have to cross their legs and wait..

They've been calling in my garden recently too. No slow worms of late though.

I have found the occasional frog whilst gardening, usually in a deep pocket somewhere, but frosts have put paid to everything else I think. Did see a squashed newt on the road the other day though...
