and the caption reads.... hmmm the herpetologists are out and about, it must be SPRING!

I view this as a distinct behaviour, seen it many times on days where it's not quite warm enough for them to bask openly and get up to full temperature quickly or on windy days. They'll sit with just their nose out or a small part of the body, ready to retreat quickly to safety if needed.
