Does anyone know if you can tell just by looking at them, the difference between lacerta viridis and lacerta bilineata??

There is no way of clearly distinguishing adult bilineata and viridis. Allegedly the young of bilineata have green throats/cheeks where those of viridis are white or yellow. My own experience of these species is that while this is accurate as a trend it is NOT foolproof or consistent. Neither does my own experience with these animals support any of the findings in respect of their interbreeding set out as support for their separate species status. It should be noted that some authorities still question this split. While I am not an authority I regard it as complete rubbish - although this, of course, depends on which of the current over 200 definitions of what defines a species you choose to adopt.

Thanks alot for replying. We exhibit Green lizards at our animal park and we are wondering what species we have, if they are different species at all. They have bred, a long time ago, I wasn't around to see it. They haven't hibernated since, so am planning on putting a pair or trio in an outdoor exhibit this spring so they can hibernate and breed naturally. Also I see your involved in Sand lizards, do you know how we would go about aquiring some for an outdoor exhibit?

Thats a shame as we are just building our new endangered species centre and would like to get involved in helping.

Thanks anyway

Sadly, there is absolutely no point breeding more young Sand Lizards than we have receptor sites available for.
As my previous (off forum) reply advised we are prepared to consider providing animals for educational display which would seem appropriate for an endangered species centre.
