I was just walking along and I spotted this creature on a rock. I'm no expert but it doesn't look like any lizard or newt that I expect to live in Scotland.

It was about 4-5cm long.

hi

it is a young palmate newt. newts could reasonably be described as a type of salamander that returns water specifically to breed so you're sort of right.
