A local pond in Epping Forest had up until a few years ago thousands of tadpoles which warmed themselves in the shallow parts early on may mornings. at the weekend, it took me just five minutes to count them 285! to the nearest 5.

Is the usual estimate that 1 in a hundred live to adult hood or is it more than that? Surely 285 is just not enough to keep the stock going is it?
