ARG's are Amphibian and Reptile Groups, many areas have one, check out this list on Froglife's website

http://www.froglife.fsnet.co.uk/ARGsF.htm

Joining such a group is the best way to find out more about how survey and conservation work is conducted.

What is an ARG? I'm also new to this. How can I find about where and how to look for reptiles?

You Guess entirely right Woody. If you have a genuine interest why not contact your local ARG and get more involved? Also the people to discuss your concerns about local newts with. There are a number of active people in Cheshire, check out these websites.
