Hi all, anyone know a UK online supplier (Midwest will now only accept money transfers for orders outside of the US) with a range of hooks? I'm looking for something that will double as a tin lifter (so it needs to be a fairly large hook) and also be useful for controlling adder before capture. Around about 500mm length. Ta |

Hi Gemma
My local garden centre sells snake hooks, at an extortionate price like everywhere else. Why not do what I did when keeping venomous? I made my hooks out of old golf clubs using the metal part of a screw driver covered in foam rubber and bent into shape. Saves alot of money and works just as well Al Edited by Alan Hyde |

Ta Al and Steve, Looks like the faunology 580mm offering fits the bill, at extortionate cost of course, if I had some spare golf clubs Al I would have given it a go, still it's all reclaimable against tax Edited by GemmaJF |

This website has telescopic snake hooks which I find are just right for adders! http://www.eurorep.net/retail/index.php?cPath=330_331 There may be other larger sized hooks which could be used as tin lifters Jon |

Gemma, I seem to remember that Peregrine Livefoods do a line in snake sticks. Just look up the name on your google or other search. Ok, cheers Robert |

We don't have anybody in Malaysia who deals in reptile equipments thus we don't have snake hooks here. Most of us had to buy from overseas and it costs a bomb. Alternatively, we DIY our snake hooks from golf clubs and stainless steel rods. Here's my DIY snake hooks which I also sell to some of Malaysia Fauna members. Here's what it looks like.....
I call them the "Uncle Herp Series Snake Hook".... And here's my son with my 2 feet stainless steel hook.... |

I dont use snake hooks, but I am an engineer in design. Heres an idea that just occured to me when I checked out those 'carbon' hooks. Find an old fishing rod, they tend to be very light (glass fibre or carbon) and hollow, any junk shop or shed. Remove the eyelets (for the fishing line) this gives you a blank, very strong but very light stick, usually around a metre long. Make your hook from hollow steel tube available from any hardware shop, insert and Araldite it in place. You can sleeve the hook with clear plastic hose (aquarium shop) to protect the animals should you wish.

I have always used a twig. With a fork in it, just incase I need to imobolize the head end. Okay, I am talking adders not king cobras. If you want to get hitech, I suggest Tony Ps coat hanger'n'dowl design. I have tried it, it works, nuff said.

Deano, can I just clarify you do not mean pining with a forked stick as it is an absolute no no with adder. The skull is far too fragile. I light hook to gently control the head whilst they are tailed is the only way. Just wanted to raise this point in case anyone reading your post thought you ment pining with a forked stick.
