While I was giving my pond filter system a service this morning I noticed some strange larvae.

These larvae were about half inch long and bright red , they looked like mini mealworms. The reason i'm puzzled is, they were living in the sponge inside the filter box , and this filter box has a powerfull UV light inside.

Anyone know what they are?

Cheers,

Alan

I've seen them in filter sponges too, they usually anchor themselves in the mud at the bottom of ponds, but I think sponge material is even better! When I went to ID the large taddies yesterday the tiny pond they were in was full of bloodworms though the white variety... certainly brought the common frog tadpoles on well!

Actually now I think about it, they were tubifex in the pond, I always get them confused!

Caleb, Gemma , thanks.

I did think they were probably Bloodworm, but it was the surviving UV light that threw me.

Gemma, any luck at the weekend with the toad taddies?

Thanks,

Alan
