Here in north Oxfordshire it's presently almost freezing outside with last nights hard frost still very evident in any shaded & temporary shaded spots. Nevertheless, i was surprised today when mid' afternoon i was up the garden (about to go & clear the polluting debris of umpteen bloody fireworks from my pond!) & i came across an adult male Smooth newt crossing the freezing path in what was by then a shaded area. It's also an area that herptiles are spoilt for choice for places to hibernate in. With good grassy'n'weedy overgrowth, logs & some old debris on one side of the path & a big, extensive, half overgrown iron ore rockery on the other side, -which direction the little fella was heading in- i can only imagine the fussy fella was swopping one choice for hibernation with another. But, boy was it chilly alright!, & i certainly didn't envisage encountering any amphibians out for a wander in such cold. Well, i've known the odd such incidence in the past, but very, very rarely though. Anyway, the little fella was otherwise perfectly fine & healthy as i closely watched him disappear into the chasm of overgrown rocks.
