Picture of large black grass snake found by Tracy by ponds on a National Trust Estate in Derbyshire on 23 March. She was absolutely overjoyed to see this, her first ever melanistic grass snake.

However, on April 2nd she was absolutely distressed to find it had been killed.

Was it 100% human killing? What situation was it found in?

Mark
Since spoken to a colleague at work who was phoned up and went out to find it after it had been killed. It was attacked by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, which killed it, but uncertain whether it was deliberately set on the snake by the owner or just off the lead and out of control in an area known for many years as a grass snake hot spot (and on National Trust land).
Unfortunately had a report from some walkers on the site last year who had met a threatening looking bloke with large dogs who informed them that "he had killed an adder to protect his dogs" So that was another grass snake killed here last year.
