The spawn in shallow water/temporary pools certainly hatches more quickly with the warmer water but the downside is drying out.How many of us know of cart track ruts and such like that every year have lots of spawn, then very soon taddies and then after that dried out corpses. I was surprised one year to see dozens of newts in rapidly drying out cart track ruts which were seething with taddies as they were so easy to catch.

Kevb - I saw approximately 10 clumps of spawn today in 2 small ponds high on a hillside above Llanelli.   - I guess its another example of the westerly places getting the first spawn; I have heard that Cumbria (at least in the lowlands) has frogs which spawn in Feb too (and natterjacks starting in March sometimes)

I know I post this every year, but...

The Woodland Trust's live map of frogspawn records is at:

Only a handful for this year so far, first in Cornwall on 21st Jan.

There are interactive maps for previous years too. I submit records to it, I hope others here do too.

I can confirm that in some Cumbrian Natterjack pools spawn can be found in late March.

Well as predicted, rapidly drying pools have left lots of spawn high and dry (despite a fairly frenzied bucket transfer programme on our part). What it has done though is given me an inkling of the size of the local population. When they spawn in the pond I rarely see or hear anything, just find the froglets later in the year. But this year we've had over 100 clumps.

I'm I right in thinking its pretty much 1 clump per female? or will larger/ mature individuals lay multiple clumps?

Yes, it's one clump per female in common frogs. Larger/older individuals will usually produce more eggs per spawning.

Unfortunate set of circumstances this year.
Heavy rain at the weekend co-incided with heavy spawning.
Pond flooded and clumps were laid at lawn level.
The next couple of nights were very cold and a lot of the spawn, in the now lower water level pond, was affected by the ice.

I haven't seen any spawn or frog actvity at ponds yet this year, but yesterday two smallish adult frogs in garden as I was digging the beds, so they are definitely out, I suppose they're just waiting for a glimmer of warm.

Had a small clump appear overnight/this morning, the "eggs" seems rather small at the moment but will see how they expand over the next couple of days, with the promise of warmer weather, hopefully may get some more but never get alot as its a small pond Smile

2 clumps laid Wednesday night, nearly a month after the original 34 clumps.
Was a rainy night.
