I have just found this site and registered. I have always loved to see the slow worms in my garden and recently found 3. One was stationary on our garden path, just crossing to go under the raspberry bushes. He moved off when I walked a short distance away. I found 2 more when I was turning over one of my compost bins. They were lucky to escape injury from my spade. I'd have been devastated if I had hurt one. I just picked them up carefully and placed them in another compost bin to be safe. I'm a little nore careful now when digging in the compost!

Best idea when turning or emptying a compost bin is to use a fork as it minimises the chance of damaging a slow worm. If you do it carefully and slowly with a lot of shaking of the fork and disturbance the creatures usually get out of the way. Any chance of dedicating a compost heap to the slow worms? If it is covered with a carpet or black plastic (weighted down!) you will probably see slow worms in there each time you lift the cover off during spring and summer and they may hibernate and breed in there - mine do. I have over a dozen in my dedicated bin and about 12 in other bins.
