a gratuitous pic of a male GCN from a National Trust garden which the missus took me along to today.  While she looked at the botany, I watched the newts in a shallow concrete pond, including this one:

From a Moorland site that has definitely three and possibly four of the reptile species we have in Derbyshire I went to check at the weekend to confirm my suspicion that as well as Common Frog & a large Common Toad population there was Palmate Newt. Well there were palmate newts but also easily found half a dozen of these (but all males)

It's interesting that the toes in Will's top pic don't look as markedly banded as you'd see in most typical males.
