I recently found what I assume is an adder (brown body, yellow V on its head) moving about amongst my greenhouse tomato plants. This is a concern as I have small children who love nothing better than to rummage around in the greenhouse and are not old enough to understand the danger this snake could possibly present - it seemed to move away quite quickly through a hole which is now blocked up but is it likely to return or as we disturbed it will it stay clear? We do have a patch of land behind the greenhouse which is very overgrown would this be attracting them and if it was removed would they then move on elsewhere?

Tony, It's an good point, and one that I found difficult to improve on in the text for the ID pages. Most descriptions seem to be geared at field workers or work by comparison, when you have nothing to go on it all becomes a bit meaningless.. V shape on head,vertically slit pupil, zigzag, I was happily sitting watching an adder the other day where none of these pointers were visible as she was coiled in a hollow, hard to know how to improve on it other than a suggestion that Kerry takes a look through the pictures on the ID pages so if she sees another she knows what features to look for. Though 100% agreement that it is most likely a harmless grass snake kerry spotted.
