Well, as hedgehogs are my passion and I just love talking about them I figured it may be of interest to others...

It has been a pretty traumatic year for hedgehogs in the village, I personally have counted over 30 killed on the roads since April, and adding those to the ones found sick or injured that have not survived I can only guess at the impact this has had on the population. Of course, it could be that we have such a large population that they are more likely to run into problems, or the increased awareness of them in the village has led to more people reporting them if they find them in trouble, I suppose we won't know until the Spring and see how many have made it through hibernation.

Thanks to a 'publicity' campaign locally we now have large numbers of people offering shelters and food in their gardens, and we have a very well-equipped 'hogspital' where they can receive treatment and lodging for as long as needed, we also have a friendly local vet who is happy to take them in and provide medication for free.

As I type this I can see two hedgehogs on the cameras in my garden - one is a late Autumn Juvenile that I was actually intending to bring indoors for a few weeks to fatten up but the cage is now occupied as a couple of local children knocked on my door this afternoon stating they had found a small hedgehog and he didn't look well. I brought him in, gave him fluids and he perked up quickly and is now asleep in his cage having eaten lots of Royal Canin Dog Milk - he will be off to the main hospital tomorrow for tests and hopefully will be well enough to be released prior to hibernation. We don't have a 100% record of saving them, some are just too far gone when found, but the vast majority survive so we are doing our bit.

Is anyone else seeing many hedgehogs, either in their gardens or on the roads?
