Hi there,
Further to my earlier post regarding plans for my new pond (its on here somewhere but I don't know how to link it in) [Linked here for you http://www.herpetofauna.co.uk/forum/topic4328_post31414.html#31414 Chris - Admin]

So a nursery pond to discourage attack by the voluminous numbers of newts to the ever decreasing amount of spawn in my well overgrown big pond....

So I'm thinking of building a very simple, shallower pond against and below the main one;

A rectangle about 9 ft by 1 and 1/2 ft, framed by brick and lined with flexible liner.
I'm thinking it would stand a maximum of 10 inches above ground level (the main pond stands 16 inches above but has obviously been dug down into the ground)

Question: What would the optimum depth for a spawning pond be?

Question: Would it matter if the water level fell when there was spawn or taddies therein? (I have always assumed that spawn needed a good covering of water but think I may be wrong??

Please could anyone with ideas on this let me know..........

Frogs will lay in puddles, cart track-puddles and anywhere it seems where there is a bit of water. The trouble is some of these places dry out and dessicate the spawn. If they get enough rain to remain viable they are good spots as the water gets warm in the sun and the taddies thrive. I think to give optimum dimensions would be tough. I've noticed shallow ended ponds with lots of stones provide shelter for taddies.
