Frog without a pond

   We have had a common frog in our rear walled garden for about  a year � to 2 years.   How it got there is a mystery, as we do not any water source. We see it from time to time.  At the present time it is looking very thin, and 'bony'.  Quite often its eyes are completely closed, even though it is still moving around.  Then, a couple of days later, the eyes will be open as normal.  Obviously it cannot find food if it cannot see.  I suggested to my wife that possibly, because of dry weather, it semi-hibernates for a few days,  then comes out when the weather is cooler.
It is only recently that I have sunk a plastic container of water into the earth in the hope it will find it. I've just seen it sitting by the container at 1 o'clock in the morning, but it's eyes are still closed.  There was no reaction from it to a torchlight.  Can anyone offer any explaination as to why its eyes should be closed?
