n-tv.de report
The report translates as follows: "An 81 year old woman died after a snake bite to the middle finger in Breege, on the island of R³gen [off the German Baltic coast]. According to police reports, the snake was a black adder. The woman was able to transfer the reptile into a water barrel after the attack, which took place on her property, and called her doctor. When the latter arrived 15 minutes later, the 81 year-old had lost consciousness, and died despite resuscitation attempts. The animal was taken to the Stralsund Zoo." Very sad. Fortunately, the report is not overly hysterical about it. I dread to think what our tabloids would make of soemthing like this... Wolfgang |

Some additional reports (all in German, sorry):
SAT 1 TV Greenpeace Magazin NDR (North German Radio) Contains a radio report with additional details, including an interview with the doctor who was called to treat her (if you speak German) Additional details inlude the observation that the woman had only just left hospital, and was of very small stature, all of which may have contributed to the outcome. Interestingly, a number of tourism websites for the island specifically mention adders as one of the natural attractions of the area. Cheers, Wolfgang Edited by Wolfgang Wuster |

Wolfgang Adder bites - not recommended if you are especially allergic like me - a nip from a female 2 years ago nearly killed me (43 year old and very healthy). Regards Geoff Edited by Geoff Simpson |
